• but (ছাড়া অর্থে) Preposition হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং স্বাভাবিকভাবে Preposition এর পরের অংশ দ্বারা কখনো Verb নিয়ন্ত্রিত হয় না, বরং তার আগের অংশ অনুযায়ী Verb বসবে।

• Everybody/ all/ Everyone ইত্যাদি Affirmative অর্থবোধক শব্দ থাকলে but কে Preposition বিবেচনা করা হয়, এবং but এর আগের Noun/ Pronoun অনুযায়ী Verb বসে অর্থাৎ, যদি হ্যাঁবোধক হয়, তাহলে but এর আগের শব্দ অনুসারে verb বসে।
- The words everybody and everyone are pronouns that describe a group of people, but grammatically they are singular.
- যেমন: 
- Everyone but seven killers was forgiven.

• অন্যদিকে, 
- but এর আগে Negative অর্থাৎ, nobody/ none ইত্যাদি Negative অর্থবোধক শব্দ থাকলে but কে Conjunction হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয়, এবং but এর পরের Noun/ Pronoun অনুযায়ী verb বসে অর্থাৎ, যদি না-বোধক হয়, তাহলে শেষের subject অনুসারে verb বসে।
- None but the graduates were allowed to apply.

• তাই  সঠিক উত্তর হবে - None but Kamal from this group was able to pass the exam.
- যেহেতু, বাক্যটি negative এ আছে এবং তাই but এর পরের  শব্দানুসারে verb হবে was.

• অন্য বাক্যগুলোর শুদ্ধ রূপ হচ্ছে - 
ক) None but the graduates were allowed to apply.
খ)  All but a woman were happy with this marriage.
