Compound থেকে complex এ রূপান্তর করতে হলে প্রথমে দুটি clause এর মধ্যে সম্পর্ক কী সেটা আগে নির্ণয় করতে হবে। যেমন: কারণ-ফলাফল, কাজ-উদ্দেশ্য, ঘটনা-ঘটনার সময়, শর্ত-ফলাফল, ব্যক্তি-যে, বস্তু-যা ইত্যাদি।
 
Compound থেকে Complex করতে হলে: 
Compound এর Conjunction বাদ দিতে হবে; 
Complex এর Conjunction যোগ করতে হবে; 
2টি Clause এর মধ্যে ১টি Clause যেভাবে আছে সেভাবে রেখে দিতে হবে।
The old man killed the bird and was punished. - এই sentence এর clause গুলোর মধ্যে কারণ-ফলাফল সম্পর্ক বিদ্যমান। তাই complex sentence এর conjunction হিসেবে as/since বসাতে হবে।

সুতরাং, বাক্যটির সঠিক Complex form হবে - Since the old man killed the bird, he was punished.
