- Pope যখন Shakespeare-এর রচনাগুলো সম্পাদনা করে সেগুলোকে ১৮শ শতকের রুচি ও চাহিদার উপযোগী করে তুলেছিলেন, তখন পণ্ডিত Lewis Theobald তাঁর “Shakespeare Restored” (1726) গ্রন্থে Pope-এর সমালোচনা করেন।

- এর জবাবে Pope ১৭২৮ সালে “The Dunciad”-এর প্রথম সংস্করণ প্রকাশ করেন। এই গ্রন্থে Theobald-কে Tibbald নামে উপস্থাপন করা হয়। তাকে মূর্খতার দেবী (Goddess of Dullness বা Dulness)-এর প্রিয় পুত্র হিসেবে দেখানো হয়েছে। Pope-এর মতে, এটি ছিল এমন এক যুগের জন্য উপযুক্ত নায়ক, যে যুগে অতি পাণ্ডিত্যপূর্ণ ভান ও নিষ্ফল বিদ্যার (pedantry) আধিপত্য ছিল।

- Alexander Pope রচিত এটি মূলত একটি Satirical poem.
- কবিতাটি ১৭২৮ সালে তিনটি বইতে প্রথম বেনামে প্রকাশিত হয়। পরবর্তীতে ১৭৪৩ সালে এটি চূড়ান্ত আকারে চারটি বইতে প্রকাশিত হয়।
- The poem is written largely in iambic pentameter.
- Dunciad (1728) Dunce শব্দের অর্থ নির্বোধ আর Dunciad শব্দের অর্থ নির্বোধ দল সম্পর্কিত মহাকাব্য।
- কবি পৌপ এখানে তার সমালোচকদের অত্যন্ত তীর্যক এবং তীক্ষ্ণ ভাষায় অপমান করেছেন।

• Alexander Pope:
- He is the most famous poet of The Augustan Age.
- The Augustan Age is also known/ called as the Age of the Pope.
- কারণ এই যুগে অন্যতম সাহিত্যিক ছিলেন Alexander Pope যিনি এই যুগে তাঁর লেখনীর দ্বারা আধিপত্য বিস্তার করেছিলেন।
- তিনি একজন Mock Heroic Poet হিসাবেও পরিচিত।
