- এই টার্ম টি ল্যাটিন শব্দ 'humor or umor' থেকে উদ্ভূত হয়েছে যারা মানে হচ্ছে “liquid,বা তরল”।
- মধ্যযুগীয় এবং রেনেসাঁ চিকিৎসা তত্ত্বে এর ব্যবহার দেখা যেতো যেখানে বলা হয় যে, মানুষের শরীর মূলত চারটি liquids বা humours এর সমন্বয়ে গঠিত।
- এগুলো হচ্ছে - blood, phlegm, yellow bile (choler), and black bile (melancholy).
- When properly balanced, these humours were thought to give the individual a healthy mind in a healthy body.

• Comedy of humours:
- This dramatic genre is most closely associated with the English playwright Ben Jonson from the late 16th century.
- এই ধরণের কমেডিগুলোতে সাধারণত চরিত্রগুলো নিজেদের হিউমার (temperaments) অনুযায়ী আচরণ করে থাকে।
- এই হিউমার গুলো হচ্ছে - Choleric (খিটখিটে; বদমেজাজি), melancholic (বিষাদবায়ুগ্রস্ত; বিষাদপূর্ণ), sanguine (আশাবাদী) and phelgmatic (স্বভাবত উদাসীন)।

• Example: Ben Jonson's Every man in His Humour and Every man Out of His Humour are two famous comedies of humours.
