- গতানুতিক ভিক্টোরিয়ান ফিকশনের চেয়ে কিছুটা ভিন্ন এই উপন্যাসটি।
- গ্রামীণ সমাজের দরিদ্র শ্রেণীর এক মেয়েকে কেন্দ্র করে কাহিনী এগিয়ে যায়। মেয়েটির নাম Tess Durbeyfield. 
- এছাড়া যৌনতা এবং ধর্মীয় বিষয় নিয়েও বিতর্কিত উপাদান আছে উপন্যাসটিতে।

- Thomas Hardy is known as a pessimistic Novelist.
- তিনি Victorian age এর শ্রেষ্ঠ ঔপন্যাসিক এবং ছোট গল্পকার।
- He was born in England in 1840.
- তাকে বলা হয়,  Regional Novelist and a poet বা আঞ্চলিক ঔপন্যাসিক বা কবি। একটি মাত্র নির্দিষ্ট অঞ্চলকে কেন্দ্র করেই তার সকল সাহিত্যকর্ম রচিত হওয়ার কারণে তাকে এই উপাধি দেয়া হয়। 
- Thomas Hardy এর ছোটবেলা কাটে গ্রামে। গ্রামে কাটানো শৈশবের স্মৃতি তার পরবর্তীকালের রচিত সাহিত্যকর্মে এক ব্যাপক প্রভাব ফেলে।
